Performance / Installation by Gesamtatelier and AAIS
The principle of superposition in wave physics states that when two waves travelling along the same medium meet, they interfere and result into the sum of the displacements caused by the individual waves at each location. In quantum mechanics, superposition declares that any two (or more) quantum states can be added together “superposed” and the result will be another valid quantum state. In the 1980’s architect Bernard Tschumi used the term “superimposition” to describe the layering of various architectural compositions and gestures, which produces an eventual architecture open to many interpretations.
Superposition is a performative, interactive installation which draws inspiration from tangible and intangible spaces, as well as theories regarding our perception of the worlds we inhabit. As the fabric of spacetime unfolds, it activates several areas and layers of our realities, the scales of our existence and the binaries which define our experiences. It weaves them all into the state when Schrödinger’s cat is both dead and alive, real and unreal.
The project was developed as part of the Architectural Association Interprofessional Studio MA/MFA in Spatial Performance and Design and it was performed at the Architekturzentrum in Vienna.
